My DVD burner supports 2x speed, Would burning a disc at 2x be any less compatible than burning at 1x?
I always burn my movies/PS2 games to DVDRW (pioneer) at 2x before DVD-R (Verbatim). Have never had any problems with the DVDRW copies - they work fine. I always knock it down to 1x for the final burn though - just in case!
If anyone actually has some evidence of 2x not working as well or not lasting as long as 1x burns please let me know (as long as you're using decent media - don't bother saying quot;I burned my Datasafe/Bulkpaq at 2x and they didn't work very well. These discs are bound not to work well at 2x due them being rubbish).
The PI-Sum error rate increases with burning speed for any media! If you have bad media in the first place, the error rate becomes visible in playback or when copying data back from that disc.
High quality media will have an increased error rate at higher speeds as well, but still be far below the allowed error rate acc. to specs.
So you are safe to burn branded media at 2x that is certified for higher speeds but you are more safe to just burn at 1x!
Since the error rate also increases with life time of each disc (due to UV-light damaging the dye and corrosion to the reflective layer) a 1x written disc will have a longer life span since it allows the error rate to increase at a higher amount until it becomes visible.

PS: I don´t bother burning at 1x - I always let Nero do its job at 1x when I go to bed and have it shut down the PC automatically afterwards! |
