DVD backup of Lost Highway R2 (multi-pgc question)

I'm trying to make a full backup of Lost Highway Region 2. There are little extras so I won't bother re-encoding them but I need to re-encode main movie as it is too big to fit on a DVD5.

The problem with this DVD, is that the main movie has 2 PGCs, which both are the same length and each contain the main movie. I fail to find any difference in the two PGCs when I extract them. In IFOEdit I see that PGC1 is Title1 and PGC2 is Title2, but the use same vobid (1) and have the same chapter and cell points..

I tried re-encoding both PGCs separately using DIF4U and DC4U but how do I put it back together? I've tried Scenarist, but the final output is twice as big as intended since each PGC contain the full movie

I know I could just use one of the PGCs in a separate title, but that makes the movie skip a LOT when I put it back with the original menu and extras :/

If I failed to give out all necessary info let me know and I'll find out.

Any tips?

From what you have said, it sounds like you need to demux by VobID instead of PGC

Thanks, I'll try to do that. Still don't understand how that would help when I try to put this DVD bakc together with the original menu since it expects a VTS_02 with two PGCs..

I tried demuxing by vobid and the encode comes out fine and I'm able to successfully author a new dvd using IFOedit.

The problem turns up when I try to put the original menu back in. I rename the main movie to vts_02 and move the ifoedit authored vts_02 ifo and bup out of the directory and copy all the files from the DVD together with my authored vobs, not overwriting the main movie with original vobs.

I then use IFOupdate to update the original vts_02 ifo with the needed info from my ifoedit authored vts_02 ifo. I am unsure about this step since my original ifo contains 2 PGC and my ifoedit authored ifo only conatin 1 PGC. Is there a way to do this manually to edit out the second PGC?

I then open the original video_ts ifo in ifoedit and get vts sectors.

When I try to play this DVD it starts up allright but I can't choose scenes from scene selection menu and the movie has a lot of jerky parts and ends prematurely.

No sure about authoring in IFOedit, as I use Scenarist.

But VTS_02 should be built exactly the same as on the original DVD. Therefore as you have demuxed and encoded the main movie by VobID, you should create the VTS with 2 PGC's but link the same VobID to both PGC's

I have seen this on a lot of my disks where the menus are in two languages. I am lucky enough to live and work in China where I can buy quot;originalquot; DVD-9 movies for US$2. Backing up DVD's is a hobby and a challenge, because if I want a backup it is easier (and cheaper!!)to go to the shop and buy another.

However, the great tools these guys develop makes it all the more interesting and Doom9's and Trilight's guides make the process quicker to understand. A big up to all of you.

I have only used Scenarist for some very easy projects, could you please tell me how to link the same vob-id to both PGC?

DIF4U and DC4U only created one of the PGCs for me. But I guess this is alright since I should somehow add that PGC twice and linking them to same id? Or have I misunderstood?

Thanx for your help

If my understanding is correct and you have demuxed by VobID, then the resulting output you get from DIF4U and what you have encoded is not a PGC but a VobID.

so you should then import that VobID into Scenarist as one of your quot;assetsquot; then in your scenario editor recreate the structure from your original IFO, which is to create 2 PGC within the VTS and link this quot;assetquot; to both of them.

I suggest you look Trilights or Doom9's guides as they are much better at explaining the Scenarist process than me.

Ah.. I see, didn't really know what I was doing, heh.

I'll try to read up on those guides and check it out later today.

Just one little question.. it should be ok for me to only re-create the main movie titleset in Scenarist and then use ifoupdate/ifoedit to put the menu back in as I'm uncomfortable working in Scenarist and I know I don't have the time to learn menu editing in Scenarist at the moment.

Persevere working with Scenarist you'll be glad you did. All I did was read the guides and after a couple of tries it all fell into place.

The question you mentioned seems feasible, but as I said, I am not an expert.

It worked! However the audio is slightly out of sync and I don't know how to enter the delay into Scenarist (should be -80ms).

I tried cutting off 80ms using Ac3 Delay fixer but somehow it cut 94ms :/

Don't bother using Scenarist for the menus (unless they are real big animated menus you'd like to decrease in size, which I still have to figure out how to do). Just use DIF4U and activate the option to create the VIDEO_TS folder. This will allow you to have all your VTS_xx_0.vob, IFO, BUP files altogether.
Now just deal with the movies and extras (DoCCE, reauthorist) and once you're done, copy your encoded Vobs, use Ifoupdate to update corresponding IFO files in the VIDEO_TS folder created by DIF4U, and there you go.

Everything's perfectly explained in Trilight uber guide.

Have fun.

Yeah, I wasn't doing menus in Scenarist. I only made two titles in the vts and added one similar PGC of the same video track to each title. This recreated the original DVD structure perfectly and I was able to put it back with original menus and extras using ifoupdate/ifoedit method

Sync was also fixed by using headac3he

I'm quite satisfied now

Thanx for all the help!
