I have the same unit and the firmware version 1.0.0.3 simply does not support vbr mp3 audio. So its no wonder that none of the clips played flawlessly.
I have made various test with all kinds of bitrates, even very high around 5000 (but only with cbr mp3 and ac3) and these are my results:
divx 5.05:
-quarter pixel not supported
-gmc works
-bidirectional encoding works
xvid:
-qpel not supported
-gmc not supported
-bframes set to 1 works, any higher values do not run smooth.
none of the clips that worked had hickups, all played fine.
theres also an inoffical firmware version 1.0.0.5 wich supports vbr mp3. the firmware on the elta homepage only has a new date because they changed the readme.
... since i dont want t ostar ANOTHEr thread about this (de/artikel.asp?Ar...amp;Artikel1=8882) dvd player i add my question here...
overall this thing looks gread.. but i am using ogg and ogm as sound and containder for a pretty long time now... and then there was that first release of matroska few weeks ago... are there any players with capability of playing those on the way?
could it be possible to get/make/hack a firmware to support other containders and stuff?
no, there's no such player and there probably won't be for a long time to come. Unfortunately the OS isn't available despite being Linux (some possible GPL issues are looming there), so you can't just hack it in. It's a matter of the market.. if the market demands it, eventually it will happen, but for now the demand isn't there and if you're speculating on hardware player, better keep on using AVI.
Well people have been deconstructing the kiss firmware for a while but the linux based players have compiled executable files for many of the playback features which are very hard to hack.

Hi,
I have a question about this 'no more than one b-frame' thingy - is the reason known? I'm a little surprised, because more b-frames don't actually require more memory, processing power or anything (except that b-frames generally require a bit more processing power in general).
If the reason is not really known, could you please make a small test and encode something with quot;packed bitstreamquot; enabled? If the problem was in reading the stream, that _might_ just fix the problem.
Just a note: 2-pass will not work with packed bitstream correctly.
Thanks,
Radek

hehe.. thanks for another test option. I will actually get another player using the same hardware pretty soon and I have to write a review (I get to keep the hardware in return) so that test should come in handy. Just today I saw that the new firmware has been released, and according to a post by BaronVlad in the German forum the upgrade adds DivX3 capabilities.. time for another testing session tomorrow.
Another thing that I'd like to know about all hardware players is if they can handle custom matrices. Especially those containing values below 16 or even below 8.
Hi kilg0r3-
I use the Custom Matrices almost exclusively (hvs better and best mostly), and mine (Bravo D1) plays them fine. You'd have to check yourself about the values they use.
I've got some questions for owners of the Elta 8882 player:
1) Now that the latest firmware is out on the Elta site, is the problem with freezing image when playing Divx 5 files solved?
New firmware:
downloads/softwar..._7_1172003.zip
2) What is the sound quality of this player like? I've heard that the sound quality of the Liteon and the Kiss are average, and I'm hoping that the Elta does better at this. I think sound quality is very important when buying a player.
I'm considering buying the Elta, but I'm doubting between this one and the Kiss, the Liteon or the Hiteker HE-920 (just out this month).
Since I need to drive to Germany as the Elta is not for sale here in the Netherlands I want to be sure it's a good player and worth the trip.
well, i never had problems with freezing image when playing correctly encoded divx5/xvid files. (that means no qpel for divx5 and no qpel, gmc and bframesgt;1 in xvid)
but i have to say that i play all files from dvd, dont know if that makes a difference.
there was a test in the latest ct magazine with most of these players and they wrote that the liteon has a very bad audio quality, the others including the elta and the kiss are all better, but i dont think you can compare them to a quot;high endquot; player.
and now my very personal opinion:
if you want a divx player, you can buy the elta. if you want also a good dvd player, stay away from it (and also the compatibles, like scott,xoro,waitec...). they are just missing basic dvd player functions.Originally posted by Arcee

The sound quality of the kiss players IMO is excellent, there is an issue with 3.11 movies with sound due a hardware limitation but kiss are re-working 3.11 support as we speak. Normal xvid and DVD audio play well.
@Doom9
I just bought a elta 8882 divx player at MediaMarkt in NordHorn.
At home i downloaded the latest firmware: 8882 MP4_Firmwareupdate 1.0.0.6_3_4_5_7_1172003.zip and flashed the brand new elta 8882.
My first impression is great, this thing play's all my cd's dvd's etc.
After checking a few titles some things are verry stange. Some movies stotter with the image's sometimes the image stops and the audio keeps running.
I't not just my player but also 2 other player we bought. They all got the same problem.
I burn the avi's on regular cd's with a 40 x burn speed, and on the Dvd's at the media max speed. Is this maybe the problem or do all those players have this problem.
I also had a problem booting a dvd, the menu was gone and i couldn't select a thing, the only option i had left was a power down nothing worked anymore.....
I don't know what the issues are with this player... hopefully you can help me out.
Are there also other places where they discus this player ?
Cheers
