Suddenly NO sound from computer? SOMEONE please help! computer, suddenly, horrible, directly, programs

so I could record some music from a flash webpage using a microphone.

Well, i installed a few, and finally one worked.  But suddenly, I try to open a video clip, and I get no sound at all.  If I turn up the volume I get a horrible screech.  Same for all my music/videos.

Also, I noticed if I talk into my microphone, I can hear it come directly through the speakers, even though no programs are running.  If I unplug the mic, then I get no sound AT ALL.

I uninstalled all the programs and restarted my computer, so what happened to all my sound?

Sound like something changed your mixer settings. Open the mixer and set them back - in Playback, turn off (mute) the microphone, turn on wave. You might need to adjust the levels, including master volume.
