No video in Media Player. happening, something, recently, content, couple

I recently rebuilt a w2k pro installation and after trying out a couple of media players (WMP6.4.4 - Core) I found that I am not longer able to view more than a couple of frames of video
When viewing any video content, the video blanks out after a few frames, while the audio continues to work fine.

This is now happening in all the players I have tried:
bsplay
WMP6.4.4
Core
wmp9  (aargh...)

I'm sure this is something obvious I am missing somewhere.
Any ideas?

If its any use, my HW is as follows:
ATI Radeon 9500
Nforce2 Epox Mobo
Athlon 1.4
1 GB ram.
Onboard Nforce Audio
