Matrox encoding literature, computers, streaming, hardware, increase

I work as an editor for ABC while in college. I noticed that their computers, while 833mhz, are faster at editing streaming video because they have the matrox hardware installed. Since,  someone told me this it could be wrong, encoding a movie is basically live streaming information would having a matrox in my dual Athlon 2200+ system increase its encoding speed?

I read the literature at their website, and it does appear that some applications are accelerated with their workstation level cards... what applications do you guys run at work?

I know that they accelerate some applications. Heck using matrox hardware can murder most systems even if the computer using it is only 1ghz. At work we use premier for video editing. And premier at work on a 833mhz comp is faster than at home on my dual 2200+.
