Filtering Subtitles? Please help!!

Hi All,

I have a divx film with 'srt' subtitles which are 90% English and 10% Italian and want to convert into PAL DVD. The problem being I am English speaking and only want to embed the 'srt' English speaking subtitles when Italian dialogue is being spoken in order to understand what is being said.

I dont want to have to manually delete everything within the 'srt 'file and only leave the English when Italian is being spoken as this will take some time.

I dont want to watch a film with subtitles all the way through the film when only about 10% is Italian.

Just to let you know I'll be using Avisynth to embed the 'srt' file into the movie.

I hope this makes sense?

1. You could open the subtitles in a wordprocessing application and make a spelling check using English language. Then delete everything that is Italian. Make sure not to mess up the srt structure (the number each subtitle has is appearently not important to textsub).

2. You could also get Substation Alpha, convert the subtitles to ssa (using SubResync which is part of VobSub), extract the audiostream, convert it to 8 bit mono. Open the ssa subtitles in Substation Alpha, click timing -gt; time from wave-file. Use the open button to open the converted audiostream. Select a row and click play row. If it is englisch, delete the row and so on. When finished, save the ssa-file and quot;embedquot; it using textsub.

Thanks for the quick response!

I'll try to make my problem a bit clearer I probably havent explained myself properly! Everything within the 'srt' file IS in English NOT Italian. During the movie when Italian is being spoken quot;I want the English subtitles to be displayedquot; in order to understand what is being said during the movie.

I want to be able to omit the English subtitles from appearing during the movie when English is being spoken.
And only display the quot;English subtitlesquot; when Italian is being spoken.

Can an easier method be used without having to open notepad and manually remove each line of dialogue that I dont need within the 'srt' file?

I believe there is no automatic method to distinguish between English and Italian .

So the IMHO easiest way is my 2nd suggestion:
- Get SubResync (included with VobSub and GordianKnot)
- Get Substation Alpha
- Convert the audiostream to 8 bit mono using CoolEdit or VirtualDub and save it somewhere
- Convert the subtitles to ssa format using SubResync (ssa is also textbased, just like srt)
- Open the ssa subtitles in Substation Alpha, click timing -gt; time from wave-file. Use the open button to open the converted audiostream.
- Select a row and click play row. If it is englisch, delete the row and so on. That works pretty quickly once you get used to it.
- When finished, save the ssa-file and use Textsub via Avisynth.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction as I downloaded 'Subtitle Workshop' then deleted each row. I dont know if you have used this before? Substation Alpha isnt being developed any more and 'Subtitle Workshop' is excellent and so user friendly!
