HERE is the lowdown!!!
But is this a precursor to a flop in Ep3?
I dont think so,but....
Cheers!
Sweet, so I can finally create that MPEG4 6-CD jewel case (double decker with dual flap-out slots) I've been wanting to make.
I have DIVX versions I made from Laserdisc(yea,I can finally pull my Pioneer from my rack!).
Ivtc'd it looks good, but some model scenes stutter some(Falcon into Death Star, etc)worse than others.
Im giddy and its a possible 6 months away!(if its confirmed)
Cheers!
When I'm done with it I'll post a construction kit .
I hope they can beat my 16:9 anamorphic DD5.1 Premiere Digital captures.
Egad, I pray these are not the quot;special editionquot; versions. I'm old enough to remember that Han shot first.
I don't think your prayers will be answered. I'll have to pull up the interview but Lucas already said that these DVDs will definitely contain the SE changes. He has always said that he felt the original triology was unfinished. Personally, none of the new scenes really bother me that much except for the Jabba and Han scene in Episode IV. That is just horrible. They might as well have thrown Jar Jar in there.
Now as if that won't piss you off enough, there is a rumor, though from fairly reliable sources, that there will be additional changes as well. I think they plan on revamping some of space dogfights and here is the real kicker. In episode VI when Luke pulls off Darth Vader's mask you will see an aged Haden Christenson's face digitally composited on there. I'm not making this up, but like I said it is just a rumor at this point. However, Lucas was officially quoted as saying that, quot;when the original Star Wars Trilogy is released on DVD, [I'll] finally be able to release the films the way [I] originally intended.quot; So that means that there will definitely be at least some additional changes from the current SE versions.
It would be wonderful if they could put both versions on the discs, perhaps by using seamless branching or something. I really didn't like the Special Edition changes. For me, Star Wars is more than just a movie, it's a sentimental journey back to the 70s. I just want that version I enjoyed so much as a child.
Reminds me of a certain George Orwell story ... history is changed at will in case it is deemed necessary. LOL.
Personally, i couldn't care less what Georgie-Boy is doing ... bit of a bummer for all the fans, though. And yes, I am also old enough to remember the originals in the theater.
Frankly I can't wait for them to just be released onto DVD format. I never got them on laserdisc. And I never got the VHS copies of the Special Editions from 1996-97 (I think those years are right). Only version I've got is the original versions when they were first remastered in THX back in the early 90's.
I hope they actually, and completely this time, finish/fix rotoscoping the ObiWan and Vader fight scene on the Deathstar in ANH, with the famous non-glowing lightsabers in that scene since they still didn't get it right in the SE's.
Out of curiousity, what WAS it that was changed that everyone hates? I thought it was just new stuff added, not changing any scenes...

YES! I thought I was the only one who noticed. They went to all that trouble to fix stuff that didn't need fixing IMHO, but they never fixed the lightsabers?!

Some scenes were actually deleted. Does anyone remember the quot;wolf manquot; snarling in the cantina? He is gone from the Special Edition (poor guy). What if he dreamed of being able to tell his grandchildren someday, quot;Yep, I was the wolf man in Star Wars.quot; (Oops, not anymore! )
My gripe isn't really with the changes themselves, but the fact that it was changed at all. Imagine you had a favorite Pink Floyd album from the 70s. Now suppose the group has remastered it, changed some of the lyrics, added new instruments, and so on. How would you feel about that? It's just not the same thing anymore.
The one change that upset fans the most was quot;Greedo shoots firstquot;. This refers to the scene in the cantina, after Luke and Obi make their deal with Han Solo he is approached by a bounty hunter, Greedo, who is working for Jabba the Hutt. Greedo and Han then move to a table to talk as Greedo has his blaster out and pointed at Han. Han is shown slipping his blaster out of his holster under the table as he tries to talk Greedo out of killing him/taking him to Jabba, then in mid-sentence he shoots Greedo.
The SE inserts a very poor effect of Greedo's blaster firing a shot that misses Hans head by a foot and Han fires back. So it looks like he killed Greedo out of self defense.
Now, there are two major problems people have with this change. 1. It look bad. In both the sense that the FX looks bad (the gun is pointed directly at Hans chest and the shot goes almost over his head) and it is unclear what actually happens. 2. The more serious problem is that it changes Hans character too much. In the original version he is a low down hustler who gets caught up in the rebellion and has a change of heart. The whole point of that scene was to show how much of a skunk he was, but the change totally erases that point. Also, the insertion of the Hutt scene (which has bad FX) now makes the Greedo scene entirely redundant and hurts the pace of the movie.
Episode IV had the most changes by far, but my favorite of the series is ESB and there are only a couple of minor changes that bother me about the SE edition of that. First, a screaming sound was added to the scene where Luke falls after his fight with Vader. Second, after the swamp creature spits out R2-D2 in the original Luke says something like quot;Your lucky you don't taste too goodquot;, in the SE he says quot;Your lucky you got out of therequot;. The new line just is not as good as the original. I read that they changed it because the original line was not in the script and was improved by Hamil, so they changed it to match the script. Which is just ridiculous.
You can check IMDB for more changes. Just check the Alternate versions and they list all the changes. I remember seeing a site that had a more accurate, shot by shot, list but I cant find it.

I never understood why they didn't fix that shot. I think that was the one shot that totally stood out as a mistake in the original and I was shocked to see it intact in the SE. How they could spend countless hours fixing other effects, inserting new footage, ect and let that scene pass thru untouched was astounding.

I read somewhere that it was changed because the alternate take had better (or cleaner) audio quality than the original. BTW, the alternate take was used on quot; The Story of the Empire Strikes Backquot; record album, which is where I first heard it.
Hmm, I didn't even know they changed more things than just that which new technology could bring to life better.
This post reminds me of a Jeff Foxworthy bit...
