Pioneer 2x speed DVD-RW amp; A05

y'all havin' this problem? i have 3 pioneer 2x speed DVD-RW disks and a DRV-A05 drive.  i also have a pair of TDK 1x speed DVD-RW disks left over from my A04 days.  both are great media and play back in every new toshiba and panasonic player i try them in.  i work in a electronics store so i get to try this alot.

my problem is with the pioneer 2x speed disks.  they will only burn at 2x speed rarely.  most the time they will only burn at 1x.  i have 3 different A05 drives on different machines that i routinely use and they all have this problem.  all are using different firmwares, and the one in my personal machine has the v. 1.30 with the high speed ripping hack.  is there any solution to get these disks to always burn at 2x?

Well I've got 2 of the Pioneer DVDRW discs and a 105 and they burn at 2x every time.  I'm also using the new 1.3 firmware with the rip-speed hack.

Have you tried with a new one that hasn't been used in a different drive before?

Also, what burning sw are you using? I can write OK to it at 2x in RecordNow Max 4.5 and Nero 5.5.10.20.

my favorite burning software is Prassi PrimoDVD 2.0.  i tried Nero 5.5.9.0 today and it burns at 2x with the pioneer disks.  i guess i'll switch to nero, at least on the DVD-RW's.

If it works OK in Nero but not other programs you should try updating your ASPI layer.

ASPI for Win9x, Me and 2K

ASPI for XP

the 'aspi for xp' link doesn't work, but i found forceASPI17.zip somewhere else, and PrimoDVD picks up on the 2x media every time.  when i run aspichk.exe now it says my quot;aspi is not properly installed.  one or more components have been replaced with older versions of the software.quot;  but newer doesn't mean better.  everything seems to be running fine.

Download ASPI from  if a direct link doesn't work.  If you're on XP you really need to use the XP specific one and ASPIchk should come back and say everything's correct.

idbirch2, i was finally able to download the aspi xp drivers on dvd2svcd's page.  the link on that page (not yours) was down until now.  anyways i've been using nero5.5.10.20 for a few days now and it rocks.  5.5.9 was always flaky for me, and never would burn a DVD .ISO file.  5.5.10.20 seems to do everything PrimoDVD does and more, like 2x speed disk erasing on DVD-RW's.
