Windows Media Audio 5.1 on 4 speaker system

I have a Cambridge Desktop Theater 5.1 with a build in Dolby digital decoder. I am trying to get Windows media 5.1 to work and I have chosen 4 speaker setup in windows to get 4 channel audio. I downloaded the test audio files from the Windows Media site and I can get 4 channel audio from the .wav file but not from the .wma file. With the wav file I get front left, front right, rear left, rear right and the center through the two front speakers. Why doesn't it work with the .wma file? With it I get front and rear left through both the front left and the rear left speakers at once. The same applies for the right channels.

Which OS are you using?

You need Windows XP Home or Professional and Windows Media Player 9 in order to play WMA9Pro 5.1 files. On all other systems the file gets downmixed to stereo. Don't ask me why, I think this is just marketing. Win2K and WinXP aren't so much different.

That sucks. I am running Win2k. Isn't there a hack for this? I can't understand why it shouldn't work in windows 2000.
