DVD TEXT Layout

Do any of the guru's out there have a simple example of the DVD text file using a single title.  I am trying image with titles and genre. I have gone over the Guide book for DVD-Video Text Data Usage but I think I am either brain dead or just having trouble with it.  The reference to the codes does not give me the exact format and being a little slow I would like to see an exact sample.
Any help would be great, I have been searching the web for more information and have not been very lucky with it.

Thanks,
DL

What's your authoring program?  For Scenarist, the Procedures Manual has an example of a DVD-Text file on page 14.8.  There's also an example in DVD Demystified (pages 316-320), but it is so vague as to be pretty-much useless.  Since these two examples are completely different from each other, I assume that you have to format the file specifically for the authoring program.

The one thing I can see is that you have to do everything in a specific order or it won't work, but I assume you know that already.

P.S. The only DVD's I've ever seen with DVD-Text on it is Superman and the animation DVD The Cameraman's Revenge.  The format of the data as revealed by IfoEdit is, if anything, even more confusing that DVD Demystified.

I am using Scenarist and I dont seem to have problems with the Title or Text they were pretty straight forward and there were examples on both of them. The main problem is I cannot find the format for the genre.  I contacted Sony and of course they said I should buy the $5,000.00 book and that will answer all my questions, right. Well I though they might tell me what their system was looking for as far as the genre. Since the player will accept the genre from the disk I thought wow why not. I have gotton the Jacet and Text working so I thought go for the whole thing and add genre.

I keep hoping some day someone will take pitty on me and send me the answer.  Thanks for you input.

OK, I searched through the Scenarist executable (location 4A3D50 if you're following along at home), and I came across the following strings that appear to be related to text information files.  I've tried to organize it based on what DVD Demystified had to say:

I found the information helpful but it does not solve my genre problem.  Here is the dvd forums format on how text for dvd should be arranged VideoTextDataUsage.pdf. They go into genre in great detail. My problem is relating it to how Scenarist needs it to in order to burn it in the image. The forum goes im much greater detail and has tables of values to further break the disc down but Scenarits may or may not choose to implement the functions. I do thank you for taking the time to try and help me.

Thanks

DL

Well, I would suggest playing around with a re-writable DVD (or even a CD-RW with a just a menu and a dummy movie) in order to see how things work.  Looking at that guide, it would appear that something like this might work:Code:
#DVD_TEXT_INFO
TextID = DVDHOWTO1EN

Lang = English
CHRS = ISO646

# #######################################################
Volume
General_name = quot;DVD Production Basicsquot;

Title_name_series = quot;DVD How-Toquot;

Category_general = quot;Educationalquot;
Category_video = quot;Technologyquot;
Extension_sorting = quot;508quot;

Character_original_writer = quot;Don Blipquot;
Extension_sorting = quot;Blip, Donquot;

# #######################################################
#Title1
Title
General_name = quotreparing Assetsquot;
...and so on from there.  It looks like you follow anything you want to sort with an Extension_sorting line, and this is where the codes go (still in quotes), while the actual items contain the text.

Also, there's got to be a way to enter multiple units of data in different languages.  Maybe by starting with a different TextID (quot;DVDHOWTOFRquot; for French in my example) and then following it with all of the items.

My problem is that I don't know of any system that currently uses DVD Text to the extent that this guide outlines--multiple-disc players use the jacket pictures and General_name, but I doubt if any other fields are consulted.  And the only way I know to view DVD Text data--IFOEdit--does a rather poor job of it.

Thanks for you efforts.  Not many systems make use of more then a few items that are described in the whitepaper. In fact I did not know Sony's system made use of the genre till I contacted them.  I always felt you were forced to choose from their list.  As it turns out if the disc has all the feilds they track it will use that. If the disc does not it will allow you to input. I will take your work and expand on it by using, as you suggested a RW disc and bogus movie.  You efforts are appricated.

Thanks,
DL

I've been adding DVD-TEXT information to all the titles that I've authored in Scenarist and I have never had a problem, everything is pretty straight forward and has worked well for me.

Now, if I backup a disc using one of the quot;one-clickquot; solutions, is there any way of subsequently adding the DVD-TEXT info into that disc?

Sorry if this question's been asked before...

Cheers,
Neil

Doing a backup and adding text (not including genre). I use IFOEdit to strip items I do not want. I then use DVDMeastro to add the text and JACKET_P pictures. I rename the movie to what I want and then save the project using the same name. Then place a bmp pictures on the movie track to allow it to compile the movie. Once the compiling is finished I end up with a very small DVD movie of which I only need “VIDEO_TS.IFO” and “VIDEO_TS.BUP”.  I take the two newly created files and overwrite the ones created by IFOEdit when the stripping was done. I then reload IFOEdit and Get VTS Sectors.  This makes a minor change and your done.  When I place the disc in my Sony systems it reads the Title of the movie and puts the JACKET_P picture in the ICON slot. If I could just get genre to work I would be very very happy. There are some check boxes that must be checked but I think they are self-evident. This may not work with Scenarist because I believe it requires an audio track as well as a video. I guess you could put a bogus audio track on it as well.

DL

Haven't got access to Maestro, but I'll have a go at doing something similar with Scenarist. Hopefully it might not be too hard to do.

Famous last words eh?.....

Scenarist will work you will just need to load your text file and place a small amount of audio before you run the compile/create.

DL

Good Luck

Thanks McPoodle, that was REALLY helpful. Tough I have a q: How the hell should i make text data for a multi vts disc? I have 4 titles in vts1 and 2 in vts2. Making a text data for titles 1-6 wont work, any other suggestions? Thanks

I didn't see anything for VTS's when I was looking at the executable.  Obviously, there should be something, but I couldn't find it.

, but thanks.. Anyway I was able to squize all my stuff into 1 vts so its all sorted out for this project..
