IFO vs. FIle Mode in DVD Decrypter?

Sorry for the quot;dummyquot; question, but I am rather new at this.

What is the difference between the two modes, and in what circumstances would one use one rather than the other?

Both result in VOB files, they are a little smaller size in the IFO mode.

The file mode also has IFO and BUP files, interestingly--the IFO mode doesn't always have IFO files, sometimes it does, but never BUPs.

I sometimes find I have to rip a DVD twice, both ways, for different purposes. I wonder if there's a way around that.

For instance, if I wish to create a small .AVI  movie out of the DVD, to play on my Pocket PC, and if I use a program called AutoGK to make it, in the newer versions it only accepts movie data ripped with DVD Decrypter in IFO mode. Even if it is a non-encrypted DVD, and doesn't need decryption, one has to rip it to the HD in IFO mode, before AutoGK can do anything with it.

But if I wish to also back up my DVD to another DVD, I have to rip the DVD again in File Mode, either with DVDDecrypter, or if it is too large and I wish to shrink it, with DVDShrink. (Or one could first rip in file mode with DVDDecrypter, and then shrink with DVDShrink.)Then I could load those files into Nero Express, and burn the backup DVD. But if I try to get Nero to load the files in an quot;IFO Modequot; folder, in order to create a backup, Nero refuses to load it. If I try to open an quot;IFO mode folderquot; in DVDShrink, to shrink and re-author, it will also not open such a folder. So, I have to rip twice, in both IFO and File mode, if I wish to both create a backup DVD, and also create a small AVI movie.

Any way to avoid the double rip? A way to get Nero or other burning application to be able to read the IFO mode folder? Any easy way to convert an quot;IFO modequot; folder to a quot;File Modequot; folder?
Any other way to do it? I

Regarding AutoGK, refer to the following thread:

Yes, I have seen that post before, by the developer of AutoGK, explaining why he changed the program so that it only accepts input from IFO mode (not that I understand the explanation, I really don't know much about this stuff), and that he doesn't want to hear anyone else in that forum complaining about the change, or asking to have the program accept file mode input again.

That doesn't really answer my questions though, about what is really the difference between these two modes, and is there an alternative to ripping it twice, if one wants both to make a small .avi file with AutoGk, and to back-up the DVD? (see original post for more details).
