DVD Cleaning

My standalone DVD player is over two years old.  When I play DVDs in it, the video will sometimes pause and skip frames.  However when I play the same DVDs on my computer, the video plays well.  I was wondering if anyone have any experince with DVD cleaners or can recommend a particular one.  Thanks.

dvd medias or player?
well seems medias.

use a good and soft car-wax with teflon!
maybe car wax but it's not wax(solid) is like cream(liquid)!
i call as quot;cream to clean car paintigquot;--gt; cos wax is quot;solidquot; and cream is viscous(liquid).
apply and clean using cotton!
if you're using good medias, wash with water and soap(neutro without soda)before you apply the quot;car waxquot;(cream)
this is the best if you follow that 2 recomendations and i do it in all medias(audio cds,dvds,etc)...and before burn too!

here a link with some options:
screensavers...Scratches.html

but if you want to clean your player, i don't recommend cos it's not only removing the cover cos the bean compartment is locked in a box(excuse my poor english)..seems easy to open vut it's not .
search profissional help to clean the lents of your player.
---gt; never use that medias with a brush,no matter the label of the product. remember that the media spin in high vellocity and this option is dangerous for your player!!!

i will that this hints can help you a little!

ps: if you find horribles errors in my phrases, excuse me.
....it's normal!

My DVD media are scratch-free and I take good care to not put fingerprints on it as well so that is why they play well on the computer.

I think the stand alone DVD player needs a good cleaning.  Well if taking the DVD player to a professional to clean is the recommendation, then maybe I should just replace the player.  Thanks for your input.

replace the player?
wow .....how much is needed for that simple quot;favorquot;?

here, if anyone came to my house and ask me about the price for clean the lents(beans) the price is zero! it is polite cos is a simple  cleaning!....if the drive have problem is another problem, of course.

you don't have any technician friend(trusty)to do that for you ?

it all depends on the dvd player.

it may not even be a dirty lense. on my old player it also started skipping etc on some dvd or specific parts of dvds. i opened it and cleaned the lense with s super soft anistatic cloth, very very gently. the laser was not enclosed so was very easy to get to. didnt fix anything. i am pretty sure the laser is slightly out of alignment. it happens. one day i will even get around to trying to adjust it.
it does play ok except for stuttering bit at the same points on movies(and these are originals in near perfect condition) but is still usable. i moved it to the bedroom as a secondary player that only gets limited use anyway.

so i bought a new cheapo brand one, $85. that may seem a bit extreme to some but when you consider taking it to be professionally quot;fixedquot; would have probably cost more than that (i know most in my area charge $40 just to look(not fix) at anything electrical) its not.

well i know some tech guys that fix pc monitors etc but that doesnt mean i would trust them with a dvd player. not exactly the same thing.
so if you dont know someone that does work on dvd players specifically its not really worth the risk.

@ dragongodz
you're right, it's not exactly the same thing!

i understood but if you don't trust means that he is not your friend and my advice was quot;any technician friend(trusty)quot;!

it seems simple but is very complex.
you know my poor english let me try to explain:
the lent (laser beam) is not fixed. think that the media spin in high speed and don't have perfect balance. the spiral track (reading inside to outside)don't have perfect centralization too.
the lent all the time up/down and right/left to stay reading the track and in very high speed (more than 500rpm, depend in what position is reading on the media!) as the media don't have perfect balance/centralization,the beam works like quot;shakingquot; very faster searching the focus(up/down) and track(right/left inside the track)!
and this is only one simple job of the lents cos have lots more!
...and more details that i know but can't write in english.
if and when in next future you open the player to clean the lents, removing the dust, use cottons and air-brushquot; that will shck the lents so hard cos it's not fixed for the reasons that i wrote.
is extreme dangerous to do and need a good and trusty technician to do that without hazard!
best regards and forgive my poor phrases!

no he is my freind but the fact is he does not have the experience with cd/dvd drives. give him a tv or monitor and he can take it apart, diagnose whats wrong, fix it, no problem because thats what he has trained in and has the experience with. he would be the first person to say he doesnt know his way around a cd/dvd drive.
it seems simple but is very complex.

yes i know. i have adjusted cd drives in the past and know exactly how much a millimetre matters with this.

all right dragongodz !
you understood my poor english?   you're a genius!

ot: wrong place but it's for the right person...
thanks for the last QuEnc!
i read all news in the thread and download the encoder!

Most likely you are best off just buying a new DVD player.  As was said repairing it would likely cost more than it is worth.  While attempting to repair it yourself can be quite fun, it is more likely an excersize in futility.
