Cropping and W-Zoom in GK

Hi !
I've noticed that most DVD movies have their Aspect Ratio = 2,35. After cropping in GK we get very tight picture. I always watch my encoded movies on my wide screen TV but there is no way to configure DVD player and also TV so that the picture fills all TV screen without cutting a picture with zoom. So I often decide to use cropping in my GK to get required AR = about 1,85. Some people can say that I can do the same useing TV zoom. Yes, but then I cut my subtitles left and right. When I first crop the movie I can add subtitles and they will display correctly. Everything is fine for me except the value of W-Zoom, because it always exceeds 100%. What does it really mean ? Is it very important to keep it under 100% ?

Hi-

What does it really mean?

It means you're making your video wider than the original DVD after cropping.

Is it very important to keep it under 100%?

I don't think so.

Just for the record, though, I don't approve of cutting any more from the sides of the video than is necessary to achieve low AR Error. You've already got a widescreen TV, so you have much less black bars above and below the movie than you would when viewing on a standard 4:3 TV set. 2.35:1 movies were meant to be viewed as 2.35:1, and not chopped to become 1.85:1. That's almost (but not quite) as bad as turning a widescreen movie into fullscreen Pan-And-Scan. But you didn't ask about that.

Thank You manono for Your answer !

If that is your opinion so I'm thinking about abort cropping this way.

You're aborting your procedures for cropping the sides of a widescreen movie ?

Welcome to the exciting world of widescreen entertainment. Full-screen is bigger, but widescreen shows it all.

Regards.

I really like widesecreen. 1,85 is very fine, but in my opinion 2,35 is too tight. Maybe is's good for the cinema. So maybe I should build the cinema in my house
