Hi,
I've used DVD Rebuilder succesfully on various dvd's including the second season of the tv-series quot; The Shieldquot;.
However, i tried to use DVD Rebuilder on the first season and after a while i get an encoding error:
quot;cce encoding failed.
MPVA VBV ovf frame# 0 (00:00:00:00) I 9188(18,0) max 8192,00(16,1) rel 996,00 1,12 qsv 112,00-gt;112,00quot;
This happens in segment 6 of VTS_03 (which seems to be 40 frames of black)
After i click cancel and it continues to encode the remaining of the DVD i get the following errors:
quot;Bad data frames=0lt;C:\SHIELDS1E1\D2VAVS\V03000600001007.vafgt;quot;
and
quot;Error in UpdateIFO: Shouldn't happen - contact developer.quot;
I tried everything i could think of.. Isn't there an easy solution?
This happened in all versions of DVD Rebuilder and CCE (Basic and SP).Thanks for any help,Allegro16.
It is a Video Buffer Verifier Overflow error. It may happen when the encoder fails his task, being unable of satisfying the MPEG2 VBV constraints. It happens (or it may be induced) specially when doing some tweaking trying to lowering the average and/or maximum encoding bitrate. I am almost sure you can solve the problem reencoding the segment at CBR (Constant Bitrate). Try 4000 or 5000 Kbits.
Cheers,
SD
Hi, which disc/s of S1 gave the problem?
I backed this series up a while back now so can't remember which version of DVD-RB I tried but I could not backup discs 1 or 2 myself when trying a 3 pass using CCE 2.50 amp; DVD-RB so had to resort to using IC8 at the time. No problems with disc 3 on a 3 pass though and disc 4 is a DVD5.
Hi,
I tried both disc 1 and 2, both failed. Didn't tried the other discs, since i could not get the other 2 to work.
What's the easiest way to reencode or change the bitrate of that 40 frame segment without altering the rest of the segments??
Thanks,
Allegro16.
You can edit the Rebuilder.ecl file.
This file contains the CCE settings for each segment.
Look for the segment is causing problems to you and change video_type=4 to video_type=1 . You can also change CBR=6000 to CBR=1000.
Those video_type are for CCE SP 2.66 (the one I use), but I think they also work for 2.5
I bet the error occurs around the HBO intro (the static that becomes the HBO logo). It's a very difficult segment for CCE to encode due to is complexity.
As others have stated it's a CCE error and there isn't much DVD-RB can do about it. Check out this thread for more info. You can also try searching quot;OPV VBVquot; to find more threads, but there is no really satisfactory solution, only several things that may work (tweak bitrate, try a different version) or making some compromises (using CBR or a heavy noise filter).

Well i opened the ecl file, but noticed it's video_type=8 instead of video_type=4. (I use CCE SP 2.67.00.27), so i guess it should be another value..
Don't have an idea where i could find the right value though..
Thanks,

Maybe someone with that versio can help you.
You can try with video_type=4. One of the problems RB used to have was that, as CCE SP 2.67.00.27 have change the video_types meaning from previous versions, it encoded in CBR instead of VBR. So, maybe video_type=4 means CBR for your version of CEE. Try with just 2 passes, you only want a quick check it works
Fo my other suggestion you would need a source with still images. By default stills are processed in CBR by RB.
To obtain a source with stills, you can try the following (I'm just quot;inventingquot; here, never tried )
- Process a DVD with Shrink in Full Backup mode choosing quot;Still imagesquot; for some extra. Select No compression for the rest. Do not perform Analysis neither AEC (you are not worried about quality). The output as Files.
- Process again with Shrink, this time in Re-author mode, and select only the extra you process to still images in the step before.
- Now you have a source that is only stills. Process with RB in the quot;three Clickquot; mode.
- Look at the Rebuilder.ecl file. If I'm right, each segment will just one frame, compressed to CBR. Look at the video_type.

video_type=8 is used from CCE Basic and is VBR.
Are you using CCE Basic?
Or is there something wrong?
Anyawy for every version of CCE CBR is video_type (or vmode) = 1
(I haven't checked the 2.70.xx ...)

(I haven't checked the 2.70.xx ...) Hi,
You're right i checked the file CCE basic created. (I encountered the error with both Basic and SP)
CCE SP 2.67.00.27 tells me: video_type=16
I'll try again and let you know.

Hi,
If you want to exercise a little bit on the matter, you may also try the following:
1. Extract with a text editor just the [item] and [file] part of the segment you want to change from Rebuilder.ecl; save this little file into another temp.ecl file
2. Manually start eclcce; File --gt; Open --gt; Project [or drag and drop] for loading your temp.ecl
3. On the Main Window of CCE, double click the item just loaded, in order to open the quot;Encode settingquot; window.
4. In the quot;Video Settingquot; panel (right part of the window) just change the Mode and the Bitrate values...
5. Click OK to go back to the main CCE window; File --gt; Save [for storing the changes in your temp.ecl]
6. Encode [in order to check that CCE does not complain anymore]
At the end you may check in the temp.ecl what are the encoding parameters that have been applied for solving the problem...
All the best,
SDHi,
Well i edited the rebuilder.ecl file as told.
Changed cbr bitrate to 5000 and video_type= to 1.
I did a one pass test-run last night and it seems to work.
Now i'm trying a 6 pass encode and see how that works out..
I'm very hopefull it works, thanks!
But the strange thing still remains, why does it crash?
There are more 40 frame black segments like that on the dvd, they are located AFTER each episodes credits.
The settings are the same, but still it crashed..
Strange.
Well,thanks anyway.Allegro16.

Another good reason to use DVDReMake for removing stuff like this on discs such like that I'd say, never thought I'd find a use for it really but as I come across more and more DVD's causing problems it has helped me out time and again. The first few frames of Troy(PAL)disc 1 being another pain in the rear for me of late.

I do not understand.
If you have more segments with the problem, and changing to CBR for the first segment worked, just do the same for the others segments
I have encountered several times RB+CCE have problems processing segments shorter than 60 frames in VBR mode. Just changing to CBR has alwayss resolved the problem for me.
In fact, it is my understanding that in an earlier development stage, RB had problem with stills (one frame segments). So they are now encoded in CBR by default.
Hi,
I was unable to reply until now, but i managed to set the video_type= to 1 and bitrate to 5000, and that seems to work.
I noticed on the second disc, there are 2 points/segments where CCE encoding fails, so i'm trying to encode that again..
But until know, it seems to work..
Although the first season is sloppy decoded, S2 gave me no problems.
Thx,
Allegro16.

If it is just the HBO logo that's causing a problem, how about popping the DVD into DVD Shrink and replacing the HBO with either a blank screen or a still picture (DVD Shrink can do this). Then save the project uncompressed and then you can use Rebuilder to do the actual encoding. I haven't tried it yet, but I just came up with the idea. I'll give it a shot the next time I run into this problem myself.
