do SVCD specs allow mono?

didn't help me much:
for vcd it says: quot;The cbr mpeg-1, layer II audio stream is fixed at 224 kbps with 1 stereo or 2 mono channels.It is recommended to keep the video bit-rate under 1151929.1 bps 7.quot;
for SVCD it only says quot;from 32 - 384 kbit/sec MPEG-1 Layer2
with up to 2 Audio Tracksquot; - and nothing about mono or stereo...

thx

Hi Apu,

if you have a look at the image under this sentence, you can see for SVCD quot;Audio: MPEG-1, layer II, bit rate: from 32 to 384 kbps, audio channels: up to 2 stereo or 4 mono ...quot; - So I would say, yes it is supported and there're also some DVDs that have only mono audio - so I think that the players will play SVCDs with one mono audio too.

To be on the safe side, you can convert your mono track to a quot;pseudoquot; stereo with a BeSweet plugin (available in audio forum) or something like that.

Hope this helps,

the image under this sentence

I could swar that this image wasn't there yesterday...or I'm just too stupid.

you can convert your mono track to a quot;pseudoquot; stereo with a BeSweet plugin

Yes I already read some threads about this when searching for an answer to my problem, but don't you think playing around with pseude mono tracks would make things even more complicated for a standalone player?

Hi Apu,

no, it's quot;pseudoquot; atereo not mono. quotseudoquot; because it has a left and a right audio signal but they both carry the exact same information and thus sound like a mono file but with that BeSweet plugin you get a stereo stream from a mono source that meets the SVCD specs - so don't worry about that. You can even use the very simple quot;Nero Wave Editorquot; to convert a mono WAV to a stereo WAV file.

Hope this helps,
Gerti

and do it with one mono channel - no matter if crappy PowerDVD can handle it.

thanks anyways!

I regularly make SVCDs with mono audio. Usually I downmix the commentary track(s) to mono to save on the bits. I have found that I am able to use 1 stereo plus 2 mono tracks without any problems on my Apex player.

I'm fairly sure that PowerDVD plays them fine also.

Oh, I first thought it would create a mono stream which pretents to be stereo when beeing played... So it is like dual channel? I mean if I encode with this plugin with let's say 128kbps I would get two 64kbps channels right? But MP2 with 64kbps will surely sound terrible - one 128kbps mono channel will sound better.

why using 'dual channel' ???
encode your track to 'joint stereo' and expect excellent quality (since js in mp2 is is, the quality would be identical to a mono track at 128kbps).

What do you mean with in mp2 is is,
or is it a typo?

As far as I know Joint stereo quot;switchesquot; to mono-like encoding if possible.
But what is the difference between dual channel and stereo?

IS = Intensity Stereo

since js in mp2 is is, the quality would be identical to a mono track at 128kbps

Well, that sounds reasonable, thank you. But I can't make this mono2stereo plugin work. I tried BeSweet1.4RC and BeSweet1.3 with BS_M2S.dll in the same directory of course with the following command line:

quot;d:\divx\audio\BeSweetv1.4RC\BeSweet.exequot; -core( -input quot;d:\saber.wavquot; -output quot;d:\saber_test.mp2quot; ) -2lame( -m j -b 192 -e ) -plugin( -name BS_M2S.dll -func Simple )

This gives me quot;Error 72: In order to encode a Mono inputfile, download Mono2Stereo Plugin: from--....blablaquot;

any suggestions?
