Is it possible having chapters in AVI ?

if yes, how ?
if not, why not ?

no, because avi doesnt support it

okay thanks
which container supports it ?

mp4, mkv, ogm...

now before you have more questions that have been answered already a thousand times:well, i searched for quot;chapters in aviquot; and without the quot;squot;, but the first entries had no relevantness to topic, so i decided to ask directly. One needs only a first step, that you did gave me, but your hint to use search is a little harsh, don't you think so ?
Thank you for your answer anyway!

It's alllright for experienced visitors but not very quot;Googlishquot; for the rest of us. You know the info is on the site somewhere but you can't find it so you post a question that has been asked 100 times in different phrasings. And out comes the Search picture and round and round we go again..

google can search within forums too...

Yeah, once you know the answer it's easy to search for it.

This would be a good start:

Rather than add to the chorus of quot;use Google!quot;, I will tell you what I have done with AutoGK and chapters.

If you use AutoGK's preferred method of ripping the DVD (DVDDecrypter in IFO mode), that has a setting to get chapter information (OGM). Select that, and there will be a .txt file with the times of the chapters.

AutoGK creates .AVI files. As said, AVI does not support chapters. However, it is very easy afterwards to convert the .AVI file into an .ogm or .mkv file with chapters.

Open the .AVI file in VirtualDubMod, which comes with AutoGK. Go to the Streams Menu, and you will see an option to add chapters, and also an option to import chapters. With the latter, you can import the .txt file created by DVDDecrypter, that has all the chapter times.

That .txt file only lists the chapters as Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc., with their starting times. (It also often has one extra non-existent chapter at the end, that you can delete.) If you want the chapter names you can enter them manually, copy and paste them from the Internet, or use a program called ChapterGrabber.

When you have the chapters set up as you want them, you are ready to save the video as .ogm or .mkv. First, check that both video and audio compression are set to quot;Direct Stream Copyquot;. (Audio will probably already be set that way, but video will not be, you have to change that setting.) With both audio and video set that way, there will be no recompression when you save the file, only a change to a different container.

Then in the File menu, Save As, choose either .OGM or .MKV. The .ogm or .mkv file will be saved in seconds, less than a minute. Although you have added the chapters, the file size will be slightly less than with the .AVI file.

Most alternative media players such as Media Player Classic, VLC Media Player, TCPMP, etc., will play .ogm and .mkv video files, and will have an option to navigate to a particular chapter.

It certainly would be nice if AutoGK offered the possibility of saving to .ogm and .mkv, including chapter support. However, it is very easy to do the conversion afterwards with the included VirtualDubMod.

Thanks for this detailed instruction.  I vote you as the 2nd most helpful guy in this forum, the first being len0x.
