Hi, what is the best program to make subtitles for my VCD's and SVCD's?

thanks.

For VCD you can only get burnned subs. Best program is vobsub (2.1x).
Load it in VDub filter or in avisynth script.

For SVCD it depends on what is your source and which kind subs you want.

I've made a Karaoke-SVCD track with a TV-capture of JLo´s quot;Love don't cost a thingquot; which has to CVD-Subs: Sub1 DVD-like lyrics, Sub2 Karaoke-like lyrics, both switchable on the RC of DVD.

There is only one knowing software for PC/Windows for the Karaoke-Subs: OGT Creator from I-Author deluxe. It took me two weeks to finish this work incl. find out how to and type the lyrics(it is impossible to import text to OGT Creator and it crashed over 30 times while editing the lyrics)

Later when I get the DSL connection I'll post this track(35MB).so...all in all, how many programs does it required to copy the subtitles?

for VCD or SVCD?

svcd

1. use Vobsub to build 2 index files out of the .VOBs on dvd
2. use Subrip 1.06 to save the subs in .BMP format and save the  text file in .srt format.
3. in Subrip 1.06 load the .srt file and if necessary adjust   the time and split it to 2-3 files (for 2-3 cd compilation)
4. in Subrip 1.06 load erery .srt file(for every cd) and  save it in a text file (control file) in Philips SVCD format.  (in the same dir as the .BMPs)
5. delete the head of the text file, add the option for brightness  (if necessary, depend on your player, it's tricky)
6. mux the svcd mpeg2 file with the subs together with program  quot;WinSubmuxquot; v2.02, check quot;SVCDquot; for Philips player, quot;CVDquot; for all others.
7. Author the svcd with the new quot;VCDEasyquot;

It takes that many programs just to put a subtitle on my SVCD? wow! that's alotta work just to put a amp;^*^#$#%$(^amp;^%$ subtitle! Damn, why can't you just copy the subtitles when you rip the movie  alone with SmartRipper?

If you use I-Author Deluxe it will be slightly easier. But the progr. is not free and no more available officially. In this case you can reduce/simplify the steps 5-6 to one step(mux with I-Author) and in step 4 change the format for saving in I-Author format.

If you want the burned subs like VCD, you can simplify the steps 2-6 to one step: encoding the movie with the avisynth script containing quot;loadplugin(Vobsub.dll), ..., Vobsub(...)quot;. It's more easier. Pro and contra for the burned subs:
+ Easier to handle while encoding
+ Possibility  to have 2 or more subs/languages visible simultaneously (Yes I've made many dvd-rips with 2-Language subs with only one pass   of vobsub. This is not direct possible to do with switchable subs)
- Impossible to turn it off while playing back.

So I think you know now quite a lot about making subs. But remember: learning by doing.

You can make SVCD selectable subs using just Vobsub and Winsubmux. I've only done it once so far since I'm just getting into anime.

Keep in minde I'm doing this from memory. You need the Vobsub package and Winsubmux installed, and you need the SVCD compatible .mpeg files ready to burn (as in already cut to one CD size)

1. Launch 'Vobsub Configure', open your .ifo file, pick a place to save your .idx/.sub files. When you get the menu to select streams and vobs just click OK if it's still on the DVD or quot;I've stripped my sources...quot; if you've already ripped the DVD to your HD. When Vobsub is done scanning the files click OK, then Click OK to close.

If you want to double check you can add the vobsub filter  in Vdub instead of launching 'Vobsub Configure' to check the output and make any changes to alignment or colors.

2. Launch 'SubResync' (it comes with Vobsub). Open the .idx file you just saved. Click quot;Save asquot;, change the quot;Save as typequot; to WinSubMux and save the .sub file (in a different dir than the Vobsub .sub file).

3. Launch Winsubmux and select your input .mpg and name your output .mpg. Check of stream #0 and select your Winsubmux .sub file. Enter the time adjustment and Select the type of subs you want CVD or SVCD (I hear CVD has more support, and I know that type works with my APEX player). Then click multiplex.

I'm not too clear on the time adjustment part, so you'll have to experiment. If your not doing multi-CD movies you shouldn't have to worry about it.

I hope this helps.
