How to capture a/v from a game replay?

In the simulation Nascar 2002, there is a replay studio, but they save files in N2002 format.. The only way to make an .avi is to capture the audio and video while playing the replay in N2002. Im trying to find the best way to make a quality .avi from the captured video and audio.. First, I dont have a capture card, but will get one if necessary. I have a P4 1.7 ghz, GeForce 4 Ti4600, and SB Audigy. I also have a Sony Mpeg Decoder Board that came with my VAIO.. Dont know if this will be of any use, but it does have a coax input for recording off TV.

I was able to capture video half way decent using a program called Fraps (and save the .wav directly with the SB card. Then used VDub to combine the 2.. But capturing the video is too much for the computer to handle usually and I have to really drop frame rate down.. Can someone show me what to do for the best result, I see most of the guides are for capturing off a TV or outside source.. Thanks!

Kevin

does anybody know a good way of doing this as I would like to know as well?

You can use a screen capturing program like quot;camtasiaquot;. But probably you must deacivate the direct3d/opengl acceleration. Because the CPU has to render the game and real time capture it you need a VERY fast CPU if you want to capture with a high resolution and a high framerate.

Thanks for the tip about disabling OengGL/D3D. I have a P4 1.8a at 2.89Mhz 428 DDR at 2-7-2-2-1. What kind of resolution should I expect at decent frame rate?

With my Intel P3 1100 MHz I got 5 fps @640*480*16 in mitdown madness 2(everything on low) if I capture to Xvid (Quant 1 motion search off). If you capture to MJPEG or any other codec like that you probably get more fps. But new game there is a gigantig amount of detail, so if the cpu has to render all that you probably get a really low frame rate. Some games offer recording vidoes and some of that can even convert them to an image sequence. In this case the frame rate and the resolution is only limited to the playback speed of the directshow filter.

can I reccomend CAM STUDIO - it is open source on sourceforge, you can get it here: products/camstudio/ Direct Download: s...io/setup18.exe

I use it to capture Quicktime movies when they are all fancied up so you cant save them. Takes a little getting used to and working it out, but works fine when u got it sorted!

I just captured my desktop res of 1152.864 at about... 15fps XVID quant 1, max 1, min 1

Yes, but in games the CPU has to render the textures too and the pictures that are captured can not campressed as fast as the desktop if there is nothing moving.
