I've been usin MeGUI with HQ-Slow setting to encode 512x284 video at 300 kbps. I've been pretty satisfied withe the quality (much better than WMV9 at the same bitrate)
However is there any settings that should be optimized in MeGUI when encoding low bitrate material?
use slower profiles...
Personaly i'm using HQ-slower with no fast P-skip some times.
Hmmm, it helps if you use slower settings, and Trellis quantization should be on value quot; Always quot;. No fast P-skip help much, also.
Just one thing: I, also, very satisfied how my video looks in 300, or even 200 kbps. I used slowest settings, an example 12 ref frames with mixed references ON, Number of B-frames is 3. In fact, I checked every settings in MeGUI that improve visual quality.

How can he knows what improve quality? At lease give all your settings
--ref 5 --mixed-refs --no-fast-pskip --subme 6 --trellis 2 --analyse all --8x8dct --bframes 1 --b-rdo --bime --filter -2,-1
the bitrate you used is not very low, of course, it depends on the material, but for most material, it is not the kinda ultra low bitrate,
you might get a ratefactor of 26-30 with this bitrate
If you're using such low bitrates, you might want to try the mp4_guy's_AVC_Low_Bitrate_matrix_V2.cfg custom matrix.
low bitrate generelly means higher deblocking values can give better results (reducing blocks)
Yes, you are right, Bond. But, no one mention, in this thread, that using High profile on low bitrates is BIG mistake.

I don't think so. Using High Profile (in MeGUI, for exemple) enables some advanced options(like Adaptive DCT and I8x8), wich can be used in order to improve quality at any bitrate.
Kostarum Rex Persia, please, stop saying non sens...
whenever you can, always use high profile.
Ah, I heard, earlier, that High profile make sense on 900 kbps or more. That's why I said that. Apparently, I was wrong.

I tryed and I didn't like. It seems to produce a lot more noise on edges.
He recently updated it to v3 to correct some issues, maybe you should try it. |
