DVD Ripping Question

Hello,

I have two DVD writers, one 16X, other 12X and a 16X DVD reader, my question is if I can rip three DVD's at the same time and what would be the best master/slave configuration.

Thanks.

Welcome.
Depends on what you mean by ripping...the actual process to reencode the files or just decrypting it to the hard. If it's the first, yes you can but is by all means not recommended, it will be much slower than doing this separately. If you mean decrypting, still yes, you can do it without any problems (depends on haw fast your hard is though). It doesn't matter who's master or slave, as long as they work is ok. Basically, you this master-slave bussiness has not visible impact on performance.

True. A drive connected on slave or master will run at the same speed.
However, two IDE drives quot;cannotquot; send data at the same time if on the same cable.

I suggest the following configuration for your 3 drives. The advantage is the that the fastest burner has it's own channel so less interferance from other drive activity.

Primary Master - 16x reader
Primary Slave - 12x burner
Primary Master - 16x burner

Wikipedia article on ATAPI. Relevant stuff is 3/4 of the way down the page.
1) quot;If device 1 is busy with a command then device 0 cannot start a command until device 1's command is complete, and vice versa.quot;
2) It is a common myth that quot;the master drive arbitrates access to devices on the channel

Thanks for the replies. I am also planning to buy external enclosures to add more drives, will it be better to add the other drives to an external enclosure?

Thanks.

How are you connecting the external enclosures to the PC ? firewire, USB , ATA ?

I don't like metal enclosures without ventilation holes. Heavy and if you need the metal box to protect the drive, you need to find a safer workplace
I prefer the cheaper, lighter, plastic enclosures with the noisy inbuilt fan. I bought a sexy enclosure and it had the same crap controller card my cheap enclosure did, no vent holes and cooked hard drives.

But man, doesn't it look nice

I am planning to use IDE and connect it to the USB 2.0 ports, I like more plastic enclosures

Thanks.
