Divx (avi) to Svcd/Vcd conversion, is there a rule of thumb?
I was just reading a Divx (avi) to Svcd conversion guide and in it the guy states:
quot;In Windows Explorer, locate your DivX file, and RIGHT Click on it. From the windows that opens, go to Properties, then Summary. You will now see all the characteristics of the file. Write down the Frame Width and Height as we may need them later on and note the Data rate. If data rate is less than 100 kb/s, I would not suggest you continue. Also if the width is less than 480, I would also suggest you dont continue. The quality of these AVI's are poor and converting to a SVCD will only yield poor results. Convert these to VCD insteadquot;
Is this good advice? Also, what would the rule of thumb for VCD be (data rate/width)?
DVD2SVCD is a specific software title, which this forum is dedicated to. From what I can tell, your post does not reflect this. If you verify one way or another, I'll gladly move it to a proper forum (divx, most likely). Since you're new, it's not a problem
From what it looks like, he wants to convert low bitrate and small resolution avi files to SVCD. Which can work with DVD2SVCD.
I agree with whoever wrote that. I've found that if the resolution is like 464x348 or less, I would go with VCD. Because enlarging would result in grainyness. Though, the help of filters, can lower this problem, it's still not that great of an idea. So if you have low quality avi files, load the VCD-settings.ini file into D2S and encode as vcd.
Its from my Tutorial on AVI to SVCD using DVD2SVCD, so yes DVD2SVCD related.

Glad to hear it and in that case, by all means, let the thread continue unmoved
Yes the quote was from ChickenMan's Divx to Svcd conversion guide using DVD2SVCD, its very good btw. (Hi ChickenMan, didn't know you hung out here too).
Thanks for your input LeonMcNichol, I’ve got a few divx files that are about 416x304 with a data rate of 114 that I was thinking of converting to svcd until I saw ChickenMan's guide, as you can see the files are over the 100 data rate he suggests as the minimum, but under his frame width recommendation. I just wanted a second opinion about his rule of thumb from another knowledgeable person. (and thanks to you now I do )
It also got me wondering, is there a rule of thumb for Divx to VCD conversions also?
Frame Width: 352?
Data Rate:?
Maybe you, ChickenMan or someone else has a recommendation about this.A DivX at 60 b/s (480 bits/sec) is quite poor to watch it and DVD2SVCD is not a miracle worker when it converts it to a SVCD. Personly I have found even a 100 b/s data rate on such a small sized fullscreen AVI is not good. But keep it all in perspective, neither will a VCD. I tend to find the VCD actually give better playback quality for these. The figures are what I have found personly, you may find them okay. All I can suggest is to convert one to SVCD and if you like it, continue. If not DVD2SVCD can also produce some darn good VCD's with the right VCD.INI file. You know where to get it from.
Thanks ChickenMan.
where can we find this awesome guide??? anyone??? is it from the guide section on mainpage??
thanks
Since Cdrsoft is now a non-warez forum, I can post its ucl. Read it at either:
