I used Quenc to convert a PAL movie to NTSC. I muxed 2 AC3 audio files and 2 subtitles (from txt file) with dvdauthorgui. Both audio files were 384 kbps and 243mb each in size. The finished product only took 3.21 GB of space.
The film format was 16x9. Movie length is about 89 minutes.
I used 7200 for a bit rate, high quality, 2 pass and VBR which I took from DVD2SVCD's calculation.
I suspect I am losing quality because I am not filling the entire DVDR.
Am I doing anything wrong? How can I make sure I am using the full DVD?
you simply may not be able to fill the dvd. its a fairly short film and you are already using a reasonable high bitrate. you could raise it higher such as 8200 and see how much extra that gives you but you may not be able to see much difference for most of the movie.
dont let not filling up the dvd make you think you are doing something wrong or that you are getting low quality, it doesnt work that way.
How can I tell what my average bit rate is for the whole movie after encoding and authoring?. Although I set 7200, I am suspicious it was maybe 5000 - 6000 on average when looking at a piece with DGIndex.

do not go by a piece but the total stream. the whole point o VBR is some parts are lower than the target bitrate while some are higher depending on the parts that need it etc.
you could use bitrate viewer but thats started showing low for me recently, weird. so i would reccomend using mpeg stream eye instead.
@Rod
What is the matrix that you used in your encoding? Maybe using a another matrix (which implies in another bitrate distribution) you can get quot;fill the boxquot; ...
BTW, Mr. Dragongodz already explained very well: good quality is related with average bitrate of your encoding and if your AB is about 5000-6000 kbits/s (or more), you'll get a very quality for your compilation ...
Cheers,
I used Quenc as an encoder and whatever matrix it uses as default (I wouldn't know how to change it. - I have not advanced to that level)
Interesting, the original decrypted VOB files (main movie only) are about 5.1 GB in size and my encode is only 3.21 GB.
I ran Bitrate Viewer which calculated an average rate of 4879 kbps, 132724 frames, and 1:13:35 in length, a lot lower than my target of 7200.
I double checked with Stream Eye and it said the average bit rate was 4373 kbps with 132725 frames and 1:27:09 in length.
Any comments on these results?
Is Quenc underestimating on bitrate when encoding?
ah a question i should have asked earlier aswell, what version of QuEnc are you using ? use 0.59 beta 4 as earlier versions(after 0.54) have some undersizing problems with high bitrates.
It was 0.59 Beta 3. I'll try Beta 4
Thanks
Awesome!
Beta 4 returned me a 4.56 GB M2V file using 7200 bitrate- too large to burn but it is in the right direction.
I'll try again at a lower rate so I can add my audio.
Bitrate showed 7020 kbps and 1:28:25 hour length. Stream Eye showed 7189 kbps and a length of 1:28:29 hour. Fairly close.
After DGPulldown.exe 25 fps to 29.97 (23.976) Bitrate showed average 8142 kpbs and a length of 1:13:49 hour. Stream Eye showed average 7298 kbps and length of 1:27:09.
Obviously Bitrate has trouble with flags with the bitrate going way up and the movie length dropping. |
