Questions on Microsoft MPEG-4 Codec

Hi,

I would like to ask where am I able to get this codec? Is it free for use by any Windows user? Would need to use it to encode some videos.

Currently it does not seem to show up in my list of compressors in VirtualDubMod.

Did you mean Microsoft MPEG-4 V1/2/3 VKI Codec for ASF files? Or did you mean Microsoft MPEG-4 v1 and v2, the predecessors of WMV? They are obsolete now compared to Windows media files.

Why do you want to use anything M$ when are better open source alternatives if your only aim is to write to an AVI container?

if you look in WMEncoder 9, it shows an quot;mpeg-4quot; profile for video encoding. however, i've never tried it X)

Look for a file in your system directory called mpg4c32.dll. This is the codec for V1, V2 and V3. If it's there, edit your system.ini file, scroll down to Drivers32 and see if there's an entry called vidc.mp42 mpg4c32.dll. If not, you need to create one. vidc.mp42 is for V2, vidc.mpg4 is for V1. If you can write to ASF files, add one for vidc.mp43, but don't bother if you're writing to anything other than ASF files directly, it'll just fail.

If you don't have the DLL, install Windows Media Player 9. It should be there then. If not, PM me and I'll e-mail it to you.

microsoft's so called mpeg4 v1-3 codecs are not mpeg-4 compliant, even if the name says so, just in case someone doesnt know it
