Scenarist -gt; Dual Layer Burner

We're looking toward being able to knock off our own check discs without paying a replicator to make one before production and have some questions about writing files for dual layer:

In Scenarist 2.7, we can set up the project scenario for dual layer. We can write the files to hard drive or DLT drive.

Now, assuming we invest in a dual layer burner, what would we need to do in order to ensure the correct layer change point?

Let's say there's 7.9GB of VOB files created in our folder that is the virtual DVD and we want to burn them with an application that is dual layer-aware. Does the burning software allow us to determine the layer switchover point, or is it automaticly controlled by software?

Are there any caveates to burning a Scenarist project to dual layer DVD recordable?

Scenarist doesn't recognize our current A07 drive, so it's quite likely it won't work with the new DL burners, and so we would be looking at writing files to disc, then using another application to do the burn.

How close to correct can we get the layer changeover with this method?

There are a few rules for DL stuff.

1.  Each layer has the same amount of data (half of 7.95Gb)
2.  Layer 0 MUST contain more data than layer 1 - 20 Mb will do.
3.  Of course, a LB can only occur at a cell boundary (not necessarily a chapter boundary).

So, you can author your DVD to adhere to these parameters.  However, you need to pay attention to the aesthetic parameters, too.  You don't want to break right in the middle of a high action scene - rather when things have a natural change about them.

DVD Decrypter can calculate the LB position for you automatically when it burns an ISO.

To make for maximum compatibility, set the bookmark to DVD-ROM.  Better media is Verbatim.  Steer clear of Memorex.

On point #1, I was under the impression that Layer 0 had to be bigger, datawise, but that layer 1 did not have to be close to equal--just smaller than layer 0. Is that not true?I'm assuming that when I make the LB in Scenarist, that when Nero or some other DL aware program burns the image, that the LB will be respected. Am I assuming correctly, or does the burner application determine the LB?

Thank you for your reply!

I too author with Scenarist 2.7 and tested a dual layer project - I exported to a .dvd file and burned using DVD Decrypter without any problems - thus far.

I tested on my X-Box, Sony Set-top deck and on the computer and all plays fine.

I used Mitsubishi (Verbatim) media.

layer 1 just can't be bigger than layer 0.

It can be the same size as, or smaller.

If it's smaller, the rest is padded. This isn't quite a good as burning real data - hence why it's best to keep them the same size (as far as humanly possibly).
