Lately I have tried fair use, vidomi, and #1 dvddecrypter to make divx/xvids- and all three of those programs made my computer freeze within about 5 minutes after the encoding starts.
However, I can make a Nero Digital file taking several hours with no problem, so it doesn't seem like it is a hardware problem (overheating or such) as my box is fairly heavily overclocked (athlon 64 1.8@2.5)
What does this problem sound like?
restore the clock settings to default values and see if it still crashes.
If it does not crash, you know why...
The usual issue: people simply ignore that it IS the overclocking, bad memory or something like that which gets shown by this behaviour of XviD.
Even if memtest86 fails - XviD finds every even-just-a-little-bit broken computer.

seriously... it's an overclock issue.
Well that's no fun if I can't overclock! I think i'll stick to nero digital for now. I'm just backing up my kids disney dvd's. I think they won't mind ND vs XviD.
If you're happy to have an unstable system...

Depending on the motherboard, (gigabytes does) you can overclock quot;on the flyquot; in windows and go back to defaults when needed.

For those wanting an update: it wasn't the overclock per se; it was the overclock combined with my cheap power supply. I got a new power supply (Seasonic S12-430) and my box is totally stable with the same overclock. No more problems!
@John: A very common problem. Glad you got it sorted.
XviD is better than any quot;stress testerquot; I've ever used. Boy does my box get warm on a long encode
