can't play avi w/ sub (srt) anything, familiar, multiple, friends

'm just wondering what could be preventing my friends pc from playing the srt subs with avi
i installed the latest k-lite codec and even the vobsub
i'm very familiar srt and how to set up mpc to play subs in the movie
i've been setting this up for my pc and friends pc for over a yr now so i don't think i missed anything
what i'm not sure is if he installed anything that could prevent the srt from playing w/avi
even the vobsub will not play

Well yes. Codec packs and multiple installs can wreck your codec setup.

Explicitly try to load the subtitle from MPC too. Just in case its something silly like like a typo difference between the AVI name and the .srt name.

Unicode .srts seem to be not supported well in most players.

Basically, if you are using something all in one like k-lite codec pack, or any other kind of codec pack for that matter, you are far better off completely uninstalling every trace of the original, rebooting and then installing the most modern all-inclusive codec pack.
