i recently bought myself a very rare dvd off ebay. Since it's hard to find and the dvd is kinda a bit scratched, i want to do a ackup copy. So far i've always used DVDShrink to make dvd backups, however i heard that's not the best method to backup as you will lose quality. So i'm asking you, what's the best program to use to make that conversion and could you possibly gimme a link to a guide or sumthin? i heard sumthin like cce will do the trick...
If you are not satisfied with DVD Shrink, that actually is one of the best transcoders around, you can give a try to DVD Rebuilder+CCE.
Greetings!
I suppose a question is whether or not the disk is dual-layer. I like CloneDVD as a general rule, and if it's a 4.7GB DVD there's no recompression at all, so the copy is indistinguishable from the original. If it is dual-layer, you can maintain good quality by deselecting extra languages and subtitles, or place only the movie on one disk and everything else on another, which again will result in no recompression or loss of quality.

The first question -- is this rare disc a dual layer disc?
If it is, you could: purchase a dual layer blank disc (around $4 to $5), and use a dual layer DVD burner to make an exact copy, with no loss of quality.
Software: DVDDecrypter (working in ISO mode) will let you do this, easily. There are also other programs that can do this.
If this rare disc you own is a dual layer disc, and you do not like the above option, or it is not practical, you could rip it to your hard drive, and choose NO COMPRESSION at all. Then, once on your hard drive, you could quot;splitquot; the disc, so you would end up with two blank DVD discs. This can result in no loss of quality, and the only compromise is that you will be getting up out of your chair to switch discs at some point. You can make this quot;intermissionquot; occur at a chapter break, so it is not a major problem.
I use the following in such cases:
-DVDShrink to rip, and to split the disc, and then Nero to burn
OR:
-DVDDecrypter to rip, and then DVDShrink to split the disc (using no compression), and then Nero to burn
IF you wish to split it, and you also want to keep the menus intact, you will need to add yet another program to the mix. I use VOBBlanker for this, with perfect results.
Other than that, your only other choices involve loss of quality, and using compression.IF it is not a dual layer original, then you have no worries. Any DVD-R blank disc or any DVD+R blank disc will be able to handle the entire thing, with no compression, and no loss of quality.

BSpielbauer--CWR03 and Castellanos are old hands, and I guess I take it for granted and expect a high level of support from them when they drop in, which they never fail to come through with. It surprises me more when someone with a low post count delivers such detailed advice. You would certainly appear to be well past the quot;newbiequot; phase of your ripping career, but please hang out in Noobs as often as you can.
CWR03 and Castellanos--Keep it comin'! The Newbies Forum is a better place when you guys show up more often!
