14hours

hi. i've got a 110 minute ntsc DVD, and want to convert it to a 2 cd 3 pass VBR SVCD. from the Qamp;A, it says there's a way to work out how long it takes.

length/speed=minutes taken for one pass

minutes taken for one pass x number of passes=total time needed

well my length is 110, and the speed is 0.638 on my athlon 800 ,384mb RAM.

so that's
110/0.638 = 172.4
172.4 x 3 = 517.2

517.2/60(to get to hours)= 8.62

well i started the converstion last night and now cce is telling me 8.52 hours have elapsed, and there are 5 hours remaining. that's approx 14hours. that's more that 5 hours longer than expected.

i'm not using any subtitles, and only one audio track.

i know i can use CBR but i want the best qualithy possible.

so what's going on here?

P.S, i have a KT7-RAID mobo with the VIA chipset, and i updated my drivers as the Qamp;A says, but it didn't make any difference that i can see.

now i feel really stupid. i was just going over all the settings that i used, again, and i only jsut realised i'd set the numer of passes to 5.

it makes sense now.

can anyone  explain why it needs multiple passsses?

and what's wrong with using VB with only 1 pass.

Hello!

It doesn´t need multible passes and there is nothing wrong with one pass VBR. But with increasing the number of passes, you increase the quality of your encode, or you can reach the same quality with a lower bitrate. With every pass the distribution of the bits becomes better (means more bits/time for high motion,... ) and you come closer and closer to the optimum.
Personally i think that 5-pass is not worth the time, because I really can´t tell the difference between a 4- and 5-pass encode. It depends on my average bitrate, but most of the time I use 3- or 4-pass. But according to the old wise saying quot;it´s in the eye of the beholderquot; you better should start your own tests to make some experiences .

14 hours seems like the right time for AC800.  That's ~7:1.

On my AXP1600 I get about 3:1 with CCE and 4-pass VBR.

There is a thread in the advanced forum, made to compare CCE speeds on different machines.
