creating forced subs in avi

I've been reading the guides and searching on this and I think I've got it figured it out, but I can't find anywhere where it's clearly stated the way I'm thinking about it in my head...

What I'm trying to do is backup Fellowship of the Ring... I want the Elvish translations to show up at the bottom of the screen, exactly like they would if u were watching the movie.  So I want to rip them as bmp's, then use the plugin for VDubMod to incorporate them directly into the video stream.

I've been using SubRip to extract the quot;Notes About Nothingquot; from my Seinfeld DVDs and converting them to text (.srt files).  Then I can place them in the same directory as the ep, which will cause VobSub to automatically play them when I want to watch the Notes, or I can shut them off if I just wanna watch the plain ep.  However, this method introduces a lot of typo-type errors from the conversion process, as well as eliminates the original font and color of the subtitles.

So... how do I rip the subs as bmp's rather than text?  From what I've read, I think VobSub will do it if I copy the IFO file from the DVD, becuz VobSub needs the info in the IFO file to do it.  I can choose to save the subs as an .ssa file, which the VDubMod filter can then use to encode the subs into the video.  Correct?

You need to set the OCR sensitivity higher in SubRip, then run post-OCR corrections on the resulting subtitle, and maybe load it in SubtitleWorkshop or even Word and do a spellcheck. To keep the colors got to quot;set output formatquot; in the SubRip text window, select quot;srtquot; and check the checkboxes to include coordinates and font color tags. Bear in mind that not all players support the extended srt format.

To rip subtitles as quot;bitmapsquot; use VSRip (that's what the latest version of VobSub is called). It will save a .idx/.sub for you, which is viewable using the DirectShow and VirtualDub VSFilter plugin.

You can also use FlaskMpeg and tell it to include the forced subtitles when you rip.

Lol... well I was searching thru the movie to find a scene where they were speaking Elvish so I could test the subtitle plugin.  Turns out the subs were already there!  They must be part of the original video stream.  But it got me thinking... I know my backup of Phantom Menace doesn't have the subtitles when they're speaking alien languages beczu I forgot to do it... maybe I'll rerip it and use the plugin.
