newbies guide to ripping to share with gknot?

I am very new to burning/ripping. I would like to be able to find a newbies guide to ripping to share with GKnot. I recently downloaded gknot and am very lost. I tried to follow the tutorial on  for it but got lost after the install.  I don't have any .d2v files. So I am at a loss where to start. Also are all the files that gknot installed needed?
Thanks so much! I did a search and didn't find what I needed so I hope this is the right spot.

That's the wrong one huh? I search for others but I guess I didn't search well enough.

We have some family videos that have been burned onto dvd+r. They are 10 hours long. When I go to compress them it's a huge file. I've tried winrar and 7 to compress and they both freeze after awhile so I figured if I compressed them from the start then maybe the file would be easier to send to my mother in law.

Hi-

There are a bunch of guides listed here:

You might find 1 or 2 written in language you can follow. I might recommend one of Rita's guides. I also endorse jel's suggestion that you start with AutoGK, rather than GKnot. And if these are for your mother-in-law, you might also have to send her the codec into which you encode, so she can play them.

I downloaded autogk last night amp; will see what to do. How can you find out what codec was used and player will work?

Well, with AutoGK you have the choice of XviD or DivX. So, if you choose to encode to XviD, then you either send her the codec to install, or send her a link to get it (or ffdshow, which can also play it) herself, so she can play the videos you send. Those two are MPEG-4 codecs, and neither comes preinstalled on a Windows computer.

Its pointless to compress dvd files with winrar or other such program .. you will end up with a file maybe 3% smaller and thats on the highest compression settings. Why not burn the discs and send in post? gtd to play and no computer faffing about for yo mo.
