DVD problems

hey this is my first time posting here and was wandering if anyone could help. i have a Sony DVD-RW DW-Q30A and i can't burn dvd's. i have CloneDVD and that works fine ripping DVD's (that i'm making backups of personaly owned dvd's) but wont brun them to disk i'm using Maxell 4.7gb DVD-R's and they don't even open in explorer. is this a hardware problem or software?

Try burning a disk with something that generates a logfile, such as ingBurn.  You can still use CloneDVD and set it to output an .ISO file, which you can drop right into ingBurn.  Whether it burns successfully or not, it will have a text log which you can post here.

(CloneDVD doesn't quot;ripquot; a DVD, it compresses them - with which program did you quot;ripquot; the files to your hard drive?)

Perhaps you're thinking of a different product. This is a quote from the quot;CloneDVDquot; homepage at  :CloneDVD is flexible and easy to use. Without special setting, CloneDVD will auto remove all protections (CSS, RC, RCE, UOPs and Sony ARccOS) while copying, let you freely copy all of your DVD movie collections.

That is evidently a different program from what I use, also called CloneDVD, which only compresses and burns previously ripped DVD-video to single-layer media.

@fettpett

1) Have you previously successfully used your SONY burner to burn a DVD?

2) If you place a commercial DVD title in your burner, is it recognized by your system?

3) Have you tried using a different brand of media?

4) Have you tried using DVD+R media instead of DVD-R?

Try putting a blank disk in your drive, then reboot your system and see if you can now burn to it.  If you're using an older version of Roxio it can wipe out your Windows auto-insert notification, and XP doesn't work properly like that.  If the aforementioned trick solves the problem, post back here and I'll track down the solution for you.

based on your responses regarding different types and/or brands of burnable media and no previous burning success with this burner, it may only be through sheer luck that the cause of your difficulty will be discovered (Other than the lack of autostarting of commercial DVDs)...

well i updated the firmware, seems that it came with YSS2 and it wasn't working with that so i updated to YSS6 and it works, though CloneDVD doesn't burn ISO files right, i have Flightplan that i borrowed from my in-laws and made a ISO of it but it doesn't burn right...oh well i'll get a copy of Nero when i get the money
