Matroska status ?

is the Matroska project at standby or abandoned or is there any life sign ?

cant find changes in the svn or any at the Matroska project itselfe (excluding toolnix    )

the menu feature isn´t realy working (same since a half year) and it seems that no one ist working at MKV at all

has someone informations ?

by the way mkv 4president

You mean you missed the recently added simple block and header stripping?

what

oh

by the way what the heck is quot;block and header strippingquot;

dunno if it's dead but it works great

simple block and header stripping are both methods to reduce overhead.

work on menus seems to have stand still for a while, although there might be some things happening following the discussion on IRC.

I was hoping for matroska menus to be the first widely usable... would be a big edge over other containers.... anyway, this won't stop me from supporting  MKV, keep up the good work Matroska Team !

Gabest added nice support for Matroska in latest MPC, so I wouldn't say it's dead because it's still getting support  Make sure to keep on supporting Matroska, it's really good. It ought to replace avi imho because they have the same purpose as containers, and Matroska is far more advanced.

New quot;standartquot; is mp4, but I prefer mkv since it's easier to play with and it supports RV

In VLC 0.8.4 changelog they don't say anything about improved Matroska suport. Does this VLC version already suport Matroska v2?

And see the AVI-Mux GUI page for information about matroska v2. This was the only place where I coul'd find a good explanation about it (non too thecnical).

Any way, keep the good work. I'm still waiting the TCME...

mkv works great but the menu feature is THE big thing what i (i guess im not the only one) waiting for and the news updates are getting slower and slower

the menu demo videos works partly (June 05) so i thought we are near to a useable status but from this point in time nothing happens ...

menues in MKV DO WORK FINE !! Just bug the player developers to code support for it. Its unfair to let the matroska team do most of the implementation work also. Or has anybody seen Xiph people adding support for Vorbis to players out there by themselves ?

menus work ?    even vlc nor mplayer couldn´t play it correctly
someting must prevent them to inplanting it correctly or are they just quot;to lazyquot; ?   (i thought the problem is the decoder and as far as i know)

is there any player out there where the menus work ?

Is there any progress on getting Gstreamer ported to windows? There is a lot of great stuff that uses gstreamer besides matroska that I would like to see running on windows too

yes, files can be created fine from the matroska side, containing full featured menues. Its not their fault that there is no player supporting it yet.

player developers are just used that the matroska team is adding support for their format to their products, by sending patches or making DShow filters. I wonder when this thinking will change.

Yes, there is progress. The port is complete for both VC7 and mingw, and recently somebody sent a patch for a working DShow audio sink. What is missing now for a video player is a working DShow video sink, but there are many people, even a company from Czech republic, working actively on that.

thats like you develope a new engine thats run with *nskxxcvsas* and others have to carry about the production of *nskxxcvsas*

in my opinion had the developer the task to develop all filters and tools that it can included in other programms

presently (for the user) the menu feature is totaly useless and it seems that nobody wants to change this situation , its a pity

i hope sometimes we can use the menus

best wishes

What is the difference in thinking between Xiph and their stuff, and the matroska team ?

Has the Xiph team, since they started to make Vorbis, Ogg, and later Theora, had to implement their stuff into a single player or app by themselves ? Answer : no

So why on earth does everybody expect the matroska tema to do this all the time ? Because a container is 'inferior' to a codec ?

To end all this menus guesswork, I'd like to say that I am not working on menus and have no plans to do it. So windows implementation is highly unlikely unless some skilled developer steps up and does the work. robUx4 did an initial implementation for vlc, but for now all work is stopped.

Edit: I'm not working on menus because I don't like/need them and it requires a substantial amount of time to implement that is better spent on other things.

thx haali

thats an word

Good question indeed. It's not any different with Ogg/OGM or MP4.. there are the specs and then somebody has to write the tools for it.
It's so easy for people who understand nothing of coding to demand something. Open source is great that way.. if you want it, start coding
